NSE Cost and Financial Aid

Application Fee:

A non-refundable $225 administrative fee is charged to all NSE applicants. Applicants' U of M student account will automatically be billed the $225 administrative fee when the application is submitted. This fee is used to support the operation of the NSE program, including services provided to students both before and during their exchange. It should be noted that this application fee is NON-REFUNDABLE.

Tuition and Fees:

There are two tuition plans available through NSE:

Home Payment:

U of M students pay normal tuition and fees to the U of M and will not pay tuition or most fees to their host campus. HOME PAYMENT IS THE DEFAULT PLAN: It is U of M policy to first attempt to place all students on Home Payment. A school may consider the applicant under Host Payment only if they cannot accept the student under Home Payment.

Host Payment:

U of M students pay in-state (resident) tuition and fees at their host NSE campus. Students placed on Host Pay are not billed tuition by the U of M and are exempt from paying most student services and university fees to the U of M. Host Pay tuition rates for each NSE school are listed on each campus profile at nse.org.

Other Fees/Expenses:

Housing and meals are always paid to the host campus. (If students live off-campus, they are also responsible for those costs). Also paid to the host campus, regardless of the tuition payment plan, are fees that are assessed as a condition of enrollment (e.g., application, laboratory, general service, computer, technology, art and photography supplies, etc.). Students will also be responsible for the costs they incur for transportation, personal expenses, and sightseeing opportunities.

What about financial aid?

This information is intended for a general audience and does not apply to every U of M student. We strongly encourage students to meet with a financial aid representative to learn more about their specific financial aid situation. Contact Cathy Schuster ([email protected]) to schedule an appointment.

The U of M is a Financial Aid Exception NSE campus, meaning students who participate in NSE are eligible for most forms of financial aid, regardless of Payment Plan (Home or Host).

Students on either payment plan (Home or Host) receive financial aid funding from the U of M, so they should complete the FAFSA as they normally do. NSE students are not eligible for College Work Study or tuition waivers, such as the National Scholarship. Scholarships that require students to be on campus may not be awarded either. Students should check with the office/department that awards the scholarship to determine if it will be available. Students are encouraged to set up direct deposit to ensure disbursement of financial aid into a personal bank account.
